Sam Spade & Phillip Marlowe

Published by pranay under Thoughts on...

One of the new hobbies I have taken up recently has been watching old (1930’s – 1940’s) detective movies. It sounds weird but they’re amazing. You should check some out if your ever looking for something different to watch. They’re like 90% art deco style and cheeky dialogue and 10% mystery. If you watch any of Dashiell Hammett’s movies like “The Thin Man” series, you’ll get a good laugh and the characters are just great. Of course, there’s always “The Maltese Falcon” which Hammett first wrote as a series for Black Mask Magazine (a detective magazine of the era). If you like the serious stuff, you can check out anything from Raymond Chandler like “The Big Sleep”.

HP issues and OSX Drivers for Samsung ML-1740

Published by pranay under Hardware Issues

I was trying to connect my HP-7310 officejet to my IMac using a USB cable. The HP is usually on my home network, using the Ethernet connection. The problem is that it is located far away from the mac. I wish it was wireless, but its not and I don’t want to shell out for an HP wireless print server.

Anyway, After a ton of fiddling with drivers and USB cables, I came to the conclusion that the USB port on the HP was hosed.

So, I put the HP back on the network (in its inconvenient location); I decided to dig up the ol’ Samsung ML-1740 and connect it instead. Unfortunately, OSX doesn’t have a default driver for this printer so I had to search online to find it. As noted on other sites, Samsung does not have the MacOS drivers on their US site. They do however have the drivers on their Austrailian site.

Just in case I need it in the future, I’m putting a link to the driver here:
