Cracked my clavicle and then rode 20 more miles…
So, I fractured my clavicle and sustained numerous lacerations when I flew over my handle bars today. On our somewhat regular 50 mile San Gabriel River bike trail ride, I was cruising along at around 20mph. I hit a hairpin turn at mile 30 and squeezed the brakes hard. I had too much momentum. I went over the handle bars and hit my head and collarbone on some rocks. My cervelo flew over me into some soft bushes. Some guys came over and helped me up. I surveyed the damage – right hand bleeding like crazy and shoulder was sore. At first I thought I dislocated it so I asked my riding buddy to re-set it. He pulled on my arm, but it just felt like my shoulder was all loose and squishy inside. I moved my hand just under the front part of my deltoid and felt for anything strange. I could easily feel the break. We still had to ride another 20 miles to get back. Since the pain was bearable, we went for it. Along the way my riding buddy had 3 flat tires – that held us up. The pain was getting worse, but still bearable. We ended up making it back without any other major incidents. I went to the hospital as soon as I got back home. $100 co-pay and a sling later, I’m wiriting this. I need to get some gloves and I have pay more attention while riding. It’ll be at least a month before I can ride again. That sucks.
I also want to say thanks to the guys who helped me up and the guy who gave me the alcohol wipes to clean up the blood. Some nice folks!
